Well written, and thorough, but not that much about the Irish-American assimilation in general, as I was thinking it would be. Very specific, particularly about Philadelphia in the 1820s-1870s. A bit too local and detailed for what I was hoping for, but very good local sociological-political-ethnic history of Philly in that period.

One of the most racist views of the Irish ever written. Really disregarding what it is to be Irish.

This is a good read on Irish and American history. It tells the warts and all stories though, so be prepared to hear the bad and the good in American history. It's not a story of good and evil, just a story of people and history.

A very scholarly treatise which explained lot about the Irish and abolitionist dynamic in pre-Civil war America. Gave me some real insight into the transition of the Irish from immigrant to racists which was a better place for them to be. Very sad how given the history of oppression in Ireland they were so ready to take their place along whites in exploring blacks to their economic advantage.However, I was disappointed that the story pretty much stopped at or even before the Civil War and didn't even get much into the role of thIrish in the Civil War. I think there was a lot more to be told.Not an easy read.
