This series just keeps getting better. Such an emotional ride of heartbreak' and healing. By far my favorite book out of the two so far. Where Jax's story was a sweet struggle Slate's struggle will absolutely break your heart.Rayna has never forgotten her first love, Slate Declan. They grew up together and fell in love as teenagers, she thought they would always be together, Slate was everything she could ever dream of. Until that day she found him in bed with another woman. Heartbroken and lost, Rayna flew town and wound up in New York with her best friend Emmie. Now Rayna and her friends are back in town and they have a surprise for the Declan Brothers, they are going to break their hearts just like they broke theirs.Slate Declan is not the same man Rayna left behind. Scarred emotionally and physically, Slate hides behind drugs to get through life. If he isn't fighting MMA then he is high or passed out. When Rayna comes back to town Slate knows it is just a matter of time until she sees how "ugly" he has become both inside and out. Slate knows how to handle Rayna though, he'll just push her away and run her off just like before.When Rayna sees Slate for the first time it is just a shadowed hood covered figure so when she sees hims fighting and gets a full look at his scarred body and dead eyes she is terrified. What happened to the beautiful man with the smile in his eyes.Rayna and Slate have rough journey getting to their HEA. Their are tough times, when it looks like all is lost but their love for each other is as strong as ever and that alone will push them through the crisis.I absolutely adored this book. I cried, I laughed and I drooled at the steamy scenes. Ms. Gendron brought the characters and their pain to life in this book. Cannot wait for Zeke's story.
First off, the story wasn't bad. The problem I had is that I didn't find it all that good either. Both Slate and Rayna have scars, and I teared up a little. The characters had some good moments, but I couldn't connect with them.Three things kept me from connecting to the story: (1) Slate was in a building fire, a beam fell and burned his entire left side. My problem is the author wrote that was in the hospital for a few months, then rehabed for a few months. Now I'm no doctor, but a few months to me is 3 or 4 months. Someone that badly burned isn't healing that quickly. (2) Rayna locks herself in the basement with Slate for three days to help him detox. After day one he says he feels fine, and from then on has zero struggles. He mentions not wanting to be tempted, but that's it. Also, within the first 24 hours he sneaks a hallucinogen. (3) Rayna sometimes comes off petty. She left Slate 6 years ago because she thought he cheated on her, but isn't sure. As revenge, she comes back to break his heart. She keeps mentioning helping him cope just to break him. Like he's already broken, WTH is wrong with you. These things annoyed me to no end. Maybe you'll like it better than me.
Another good book in the Breaking the Declan Brothers series. This is a great second chance novel. Slate Declan was the middle brother and he's pretty lost and different. He was in a horrible fire and has burns on his body and he has a drug problem now. Rayna grew up with Slate as her best friend and then they fell in love. They were together for many years but she left town soon after she thought he cheated on her. She was heartbroken and needed to get away. She comes back to town for the summer with Emmie and Lurlene. They are staying at her sister's house.Rayna has a huge heart and she has always tried to save everything, especially animals. She loved Slate with all of her heart and she was devastated afterward. She has dated and been in relationships but her whole heart hasn't been in it since Slate. She has accomplished alot in her time and she lived in Manhattan for years. When she finds out how Slate has changed, she has it in her heart to try to help him.Slate's had a really tough life the last few years. He was badly burned in his grandmother's restaurant in which she was killed. The pain was so bad that he had to take lots of pain bills and got hooked on them. Now he fights all the time and always trying to find his next fix. Sometimes he can't tell if his visions of Rayna are in his head or if she is real. He has hallucinated her for years. She was his first and only love.Definitely worth reading. Looking forward to the next book - Zeke and Lurelene's story.
WOW......Holy Hell....Im still reeling from this story a day later. I was so excited to finally get this book in my hands its been what seems like a long wait. I loved Slate and Rayna together. What a true love story those two shared. I think I fell for Slate in Jax's book there was so much mystery surrounding him and I wanted to know more. This was a story worth waiting for. This was a love that was just meant to be. The chemistry between slate and rayna was intense these two just pulled you into there story and it clicked into place. I think I read in a review that his story was so sad and heartbreaking but the events that slate went trough made him and this story what it was.. shear.awesomeness. Yes there were times I felt sad but the humor and the hot sex more than made up for it. Slate and Rayna took the only path they could to find there way back to one another. Kelly Gendron this was a brilliant well written story of true love and heartbreak. Once I read the first page I knew I was not going to be putting it down till I was done with it. Gotta love those Declan Brothers...Wish there was a 12 pack of Declans cause I dont want it to end so I will patiently wait for Zeke's story cause I have a feeling he has a lot to say. You can read this book as a stand alone but I would say pick up jax so you will understand just whats going on.
