Flying Tigers: Claire Chennault and His American Volunteers, 1941-1942By Daniel Ford

During World War II, in the skies over Rangoon, Burma, a handful of American pilots met and bloodied the "Imperial Wild Eagles" of Japan and in turn won immortality as the Flying Tigers. One of America's most famous combat forces, the Tigers were recruited to defend beleaguered China for $600 a month and a bounty of $500 for each Japanese plane they shot down—fantastic money in an era when a Manhattan hotel room cost three dollars a night.

To bring his prize-winning history of the American Volunteer Group up to date, Daniel Ford has completely rewritten his 1991 text, drawing on the most recent U.S., British, and Japanese scholarship. New material from AVG veterans—including Erik Shilling and Tex Hill—help fill out the story, along with newfound recollections from Japanese and New Zealand airmen. Ford also takes up the rumors that Royal Air Force pilots "sold" combat victories to the Flying Tigers in order to share in the bounties paid by the Chinese government.

"Admirable," wrote Chennault biographer Martha Byrd of Ford's original text. "A readable book based on sound sources. Expect some surprises." Even more could that be said of this new and more complete edition.

From Library Journal
Many books, articles, films, and TV productions have appeared on the legendary exploits of the Flying Tigers, General Chennault's small band of U.S. Army and Navy pilots recruited to fly for China in 1941. This is not another laudatory work. The author tries to strip away many of the legends surrounding the Group. There were never more than 100 pilots (not 200). Some of them enlisted for adventure and some for patriotic reasons. The majority were attracted by the salary--$500 per month plus a bonus for every enemy plane destroyed--much more than they could earn in the peacetime Army. Most served out their year's contract, collected that money, and went home. Contrary to popular opinion, they were not fighting the Japanese before America entered the war. They did not see action until December 7th. The Group destroyed 115 enemy planes and lost 22. Actually they had little influence on the outcome of World War II; but 50 years later the publicity rolls on. A worthwhile addition to aviation and World War II collections. P.S., John Wayne never served with the Flying Tigers. For a roundup of books on Pearl Harbor and the Pacific War, see "Day of Infamy in Print," LJ 9/1/91, p. 206-7.--Ed.

Review
"Every page contains a new tidbit of information and rich, long-forgotten detail.... A riveting read." -- World War II History, November 2007

"A worthwhile addition to aviation and World War II collections." -- Library Journal, September 1, 1991

Having been a fan of the Flying Tigers since I saw the John Wayne movie as a kid, I picked up this updated version of their impressive combat history. One of the most interesting aspects of Ford's well-researched book is its in-depth coverage of 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG) personnel, an odd lot of rugged individualists. --Col. Gordon Keiser, United States Naval Institute 'Proceedings', February 2010

In this second edition of his 'revisionist' history masterpiece, Daniel Ford tightens up the tale ... and adds dramatic new details. -- JDR on SeacoastNH, August 18, 2007

“A first-rate history.” --Boston Globe

“A major contribution to the history of the air war in the Pacific.” --Don Lopez, US Army 23rd Fighter Group Flying Tigers

“Admirable--a readable book based on sound sources. Expect a few surprises.” --Air Power Historian

“Meticulously researched, carefully documented.” --Washington Times

“Totally engrossing--just like reliving those days fifty years ago.” --Robert Neale, AVG 1st Squadron

“War history as it should be written.” --The Hook

“Without question, the most readable and complete account of the AVG yet written.” --Thomas Norton in Air & Space / Smithsonian

"In this vivid and fact-filled historical account of aerial combat, Daniel Ford completely updates and revises his 1991 work descibing the extraordinary accomplishments of the pilots and support crews of the 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG) in the earliest days of World War II....

"The author's depictions of air combat are especially gripping, often descibing individual pilots flying for both sides, while providing ample technical information on the types of aircraft in the engagements. Of course the primary characters are all here, from Chennault, a chain-smoking, tough, and innovative leader, to pilots Tex Hill, Eddie Rector, and Greg Boyington (later of VMF-214 "Black Sheep" fame). Ford's history is serious, but it is also rich with stories about this colorful and adventurous group, including the beautiful and mysterious Olga Greenlaw, wife of the AVG's executive officer.

"While correcting some errors and omissions, Ford stands his ground on the most controversial viewpoint expressed in his 1991 edition - that the Flying Tigers' claimed official record of 296 combat victories (including aircraft destroyed on the ground) was greater than what they actually achieved. Citing comprehensive research into the historical records of all involved, Ford makes a good case that because of the predictable stress, fear, and chaos involved in vicious aerial combat, the AVG's reported victories were inflated over a true figure likely closer to 115.

"Ford's book, then, is not a glorification of the Flying Tigers, but its meticulous examination of their genuine and courageous achievements pays them greater homage than the numbers would, however tallied. Ford closes his book with these words: "More than sixty years ago, in their incandescent youth, they were heroes to a nation that needed heroes. . . . All honor to them." Indeed, and acclaim to Daniel Ford for his thorough telling of an eventful war in the air, one that should be remembered."
--William Calhoun

How to Lose Weight and Become Healthy with the Power of Self-Discipline

How often have you tried to lose weight or start eating healthier simply to get frustrated and revert back to your old, bad habits? Is this your first time to try, and friends and family are telling you how difficult it is? What if I told you there are things that can make it easier than you think?

Everyday temptations drain your determination and cause frustrating slip-ups when you’re on a diet. You become extremely aware of everything you can’t eat, and it seems like everyone else is eating those things right there.

Meanwhile, you look in the mirror or at the number on the scale, and don’t see the results promised by the infomercials. Eventually, the temptations chip away at your willpower and "maybe just this once" turns into "whatever, I’ve already failed." It isn’t long before the little weight you lost has made a re-appearance, and possibly brought some friends.

This scenario is too common. Self-Disciplined Dieter has the secrets to change it and break the cycle of dieting, getting frustrated, gaining weight back, and dieting again.

You’ll see permanent results while eating what's good for you and feeling more satisfied without totally giving up the foods you love.

Inside, you’ll learn:

- how to overcome (or completely remove!) the most common obstacles that can make or break your diet (like being hungry while you're on a diet),

- what daily habits contribute to setbacks and how to replace them with better alternatives to design a healthy lifestyle (just one bad habit can add more than 500 calories a day to your diet),

- how to deal with cravings and temptations (including a morbid, but extremely effective mind trick),

- how to like healthy foods as much as, if not more than, unhealthy foods (it's all about making small changes),

- how to increase satiety to stick to your diet (the right foods can be up to seven times more satiating),

- and how eating healthy can be actually cheaper than eating off a fast food dollar menu (it can be a money saving technique, too).

Inside you won’t find the gimmicky "well, duh" tricks so many dieting fads say are the secret to weight-loss. In fact, they aren’t tricks at all. The tips inside are scientifically proven (and supported) strategies and tools to lessen the burden on willpower and help you finally reach your weight loss goals.

You want to change your life for the better. Together, we can help you shed off those extra pounds – and keep them off – while shifting your view away from short-term frustrations to long-term results and lifelong health.

The Craft of Old-Master DrawingsBy James Watrous

A comprehensive study of the techniques of drawing, this is both a historical work, covering the period from the late Middle Ages to the present, and a useful manual for contemporary artists. It presents the old masters’ techniques by means of a thorough study of the historical and written evidence of the tools and materials used.  The author also includes a series of workshop procedures he has developed with which the contemporary artist may produce the equivalents of the techniques of earlier draughtsmen.  This book comprises a body of knowledge that is essential to students of art history, curators, collectors and artists, and is a significant addition to the literature on drawing.
In addition to his scholarly investigation of earlier practices, the author identifies materials and processes used by such important artists as Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Romney, Picasso, Michelangelo, Watteau, Holbein, Tiepolo, and Delacroix.  For the artist interested in reproducing the effects achieved by these and many other acknowledged masters, there are full discussions and specific directions concerning the making of inks, styluses, reed and quill pens, fabricated chalks, and instructions for preparing grounds for metalpoint drawings.  At every step, the discussion is supplemented with illustrations from laboratory experiments and from drawings by both old and contemporary artists.  Of the more than sixty illustrations included, thirty-six are reproductions of master works, and among the others there are microphotographic enlargements of detail showing the differences in density and texture produced by various tools on different papers or grounds.  Thus, as a collection of master drawings, the book is worthy of the art lover’s library; as a technical study, it is an indispensable aid to the art student and practicing artist.

About the Author

Lucy Collin learned to crochet as a child, taught by her grandmother. But it wasn’t until she had children of her own and discovered she could use her slightly rusty crochet skills to create amigurumi characters and cute toys that her obsession was born. Nine years later, Lucy has combined her passion for designing creatures and characters with her love of science fiction and fantasy. She has published patterns in magazines such as Inside Crochet and Crochet Gifts and created the patterns for the book Hollywood Crochet. Lucy Collin lives in West Sussex, England.

I own a few of the Thunder Bay crochet character kits. This kit is similar in quality to those I have purchased in the past. While the kit has a small booklet which contains instructions for 12 characters, be warned, the kit only contains enough materials to make 2 – specifically, a Jawa and BB-8. Because of this, with prior kits and with this one as well, I will substitute my own yarn and other materials so that I can keep the my stitches and the final amigurumi consistent in size. The book includes instructions for 12 Star Wars charachters, including: Jawa, BB-8, Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, Kylo Ren, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lando Calrissian, Admiral Ackbar, Nien Nunb, Cantina Band, and Greedo.I do re-use the yarn in the kits for other projects and I note that some of the yarn seems to be slightly thicker – most appear to be 3 while others (gray and black) are more of a light 4 in weight. I'm not sure if different weights were used or if the yarn manufacturer's product is inconsistent in size. I would guess it is the latter as I have run across this in skeins of yarn in the past.I think that this kit and the patterns are good for intermediate and above. It would not be the first kit that I would give to a beginner to learn how to crochet. There are more advanced techniques used which, while there are good instructions and photographs, may be difficult for someone new to crochet to follow. If you are a beginner and want to work on these characters, it could be a fun challenge but I recommend having someone more experienced around to ask questions. This kit includes materials needed (except glue) to make BB-8 and a Jawa: yarns in black, dark brown, light brown, gray, white, and orange; an E/4 (3.5mm) metal crochet hook; a metal tapestry needle; two pairs of plastic safety eyes (one pair in black and one pair in amber) and stuffing. While the author doesn't state which yarns she used, the patterns were designs for DK weight (size 3 light worsted). She does state that worsted weight works as well. As I prefer to use a worsted weight in 4 for mine, my characters come out larger than the ones shown and generally take more yarn to finish. I like Vanna's Choice or Red Heart yarn for many of my characters as they have such a wide range of colors available. I generally pick and brand and stick with it for the full range to be sure my character sizes and colors stay consistent. The hook is okay but I prefer to use my own for ergonomic reasons. The characters look to be fairly small - if you want to make them larger, use thicker yarn and larger hooks. The instructions should work well no matter the size. The tapestry needle is decent and works well for its purpose. There are also fairly detailed instructions including many diagrams.I have purchased and crocheted other kits from this company. The instructions in the kits are all very similar as are the materials. The last few kits I have purchased (Marvel, Rudolph and this one) have even better photographs and instructions than those of the earlier kits.On the whole, I really like the kit and the instructions and recommend it to an intermediate or above crocheter without hesitation.

This is the second kit from Lucy Collin that I have purchased. Her designs are really fun and easy to understand. THIS IS NOT SUITABLE FOR A COMPLETE BEGINNER. Make sure you know all of the basics and practice making a few things prior to trying to do anything like this. Once you are familiar with the basics it is a great way to learn techniques and challenge yourself while being able to complete a project in a relatively short time. There were a few tricky bits for me, mostly with the construction of the pieces rather than with the crochet stitches themselves. The only designs I have not cared for are for Darth Vader and Kylo Ren which both turned out looking like a Muppets "Pigs in Space" version of the characters with pig snout rather than evil looking mask.If you are interested in completing more of the designs in the book (rather than just the 2 that have supplies included) there is a complete list of the yarns used for each one on Lucy's blog - link in the about the author section of the book.

I purchased the first star wars kit from a discount store and was so excited. So much in fact, I ran out and bought this one after just making the Yoda in the other package. I've completed the BB-8 and part way through the jawa. The designs are so much fun and so interestingly converted from real things to crochet. My only complaint, and it might be based on the lot I received so not ask might have the same problem, but the safety eye washers DO NOT FIT. Luckily this and the original star wars kit made me so excited I had already bought a safety eye kit for the other characters, so I just swapped out the washers.

This set was the reason I wanted to learn to crochet. Lucy's patterns are clear, well-written, and concise, especially after you've practiced for a while, and for Star Wars fans especially, this is the perfect set to pick up in between larger projects. I wouldn't recommend this set for the absolute beginner; crocheting in the round can be tricky if you haven't mastered the basic stitches. But, if you have some projects under your belt, you shouldn't have difficulty with any of the stitches, and you might even pick up a new technique or two. I made a few of the creations from the book and they turned out beautifully--the likenesses were right on target! The only reason I took off a star is that the materials included in the book are fairly low-quality (not Lucy's fault). You'd be better off spending a few extra dollars to buy higher quality yarn and saving yourself some hours of frustration. Lucy's blog has a post that shows all of her yarn recommendations for this book and for the original "Star Wars Crochet."

This was my first time doing something this small, I usually do Amigurami dolls or Animals, but I have to say this designer made the best book on these Star War Characters, if you take your time and really read what she says (especially if we are good crocheters) we can always learn from other PPL's instructions. I got both books and starting on the 2nd one, some of these can go fast in one day others take me 2-3days at my pace, want to take this time to thank Lucy for all her hard work to design these characters to perfection. Thank You!

Love the author, the book and instructions are fantastic. The kit is poor and that is why I've chosen 4 stars. The quality is my biggest problem, it's very light weight and had broken. I do not even crochet tightly! My biggest tip is to cut off the book spine and take it to FedEx Office to have them coil bind the edge. The book stays open and rests flat on the table when done. So much easier to crochet when you aren't trying to hold the book.

The yarn sucks, but the book is great. I am still not sold on the legs, but some how, it works. I have made the Rey doll so far, and it was fun. Again, I did not use the yarn because it kept unraveling or getting snagged. Very cheap yarn.
