In the new millennium, public sector organisations seem to apply complex and varying mixtures of all three styles of what we will - fine as governance in a broad sense. What is modern governance? Is it the battle against ‘old-fashioned’ hierarchy, or is it the restoration of key hierarchical values? Is it optimizing network management, or maximizing the benefits of market thinking in the public-sector? This book argues that it is the combination of all this. The next question is: In practice, how do successful public managers design and manage combinations of hierarchical, network and market governance? In other words: what is their rationale to apply metagovernance?

Five case-studies show that metagovernance is a public management requisite: it amplifies the variation of actions public managers can take, and it prevents the three ideal-typical governance styles from undermining each other. Similar cases of strategic environmental policy-making in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and the European Commission and one case of community policing in the Netherlands illustrate that successful public-sector managers are dealing with similar metagovernance challenges in different socio-politico-administrative cultures.

I was a bit hesitant about this book, although I enjoyed Stephen Platt's prior work on the late Taiping rebellion. That was primarily a military history, while this is not. The Opium Wars have been viewed from a variety of political angles for over a century, and I was concerned what another interpretation might yield. This turned out not to be a problem. It is a fresh look, unburdened by ideological baggage, but still it offers mainly a one sided picture of the period.It is unclear if many Chinese primary sources were used in the research. From the notes much of the material seems to be from English sources. Ironically perhaps, one focus of the book is on the Britons who began to translate from Chinese in the late 18th century. I am assured that the author reads Chinese, and it's certain his intent was to concentrate on the role of the British. At very least you can consider this is a good view from the western side of the divide.The result is a fairly standard but well crafted account of British merchant, missionary and military meddling in Qing China. It covers events from before Macartney's ill fated embassy and refusal to kowtow to the emperor (1793), through Palmerston's assault on the ports and the Treaty of Nanking (1842). The familiarity of these themes does not detract from their retelling. A major strength is the detailed analysis of British proponents and opponents to the opium trade and war.Qing dynasty responses to British diplomatic initiatives and naval incursions, as well as Chinese drug smuggling and addiction are also reviewed. Dramatis personae include the requisite emperors, corrupt officials, Cantonese merchants and Confucian reformers. The key players are sketched out, but are not developed to the extent that the foreign community is. The main focus of the work lies in the lives of the men who came from across the seas to seek their fortunes.The author pursues and at times overtakes the writing techniques of his former mentor and professor at Yale, Jonathan Spence. It gives a history of the era via a focus on particular individuals in politics, trade and religious outreach that formed the early foundations of diplomacy and cultural understanding. The book is entertaining and informative and gives the reader a sense of the instincts and perspectives of the time and the cultural and commercial frictions that eventually led to the Opium War.The book is split into three parts, in the first part the author starts with the story of James Flint, one of the first English merchants to immerse himself in Canton, and the first diplomatic mission the Empire of China. The author describes the exchange of goods between the British envoy and the Emperor's emissaries and the items included by the British to impress the Chinese with their modernity. Needless to say the first diplomatic mission to China was a failure, from matters of etiquette, to lack of interest in gifts presents that led to obstinacy for changes of trade protocols to favor the English, which was the goal of the diplomatic mission. The author moves on to describe Canton in the early 19th century, how trade was organized around monopoly power of the East India Company, the role of Chinese officials in regulating business as well as how corruption existed. The author discusses the institutional decay in the Qing dynasty with Qianlong and the rampant corruption towards the end of his reign with mass theft by the officials. The author describes the journey of Thomas Manning, the first Englishman to meet the Dalia Lama and see Tibet. The author combines history with travel log and gives a lot of background to the first real sinologists from England, including Barrow and Staunton among others. The second part of the book focuses on when the opium volumes grew substantially and depletion of silver became a larger concern. The author gives the story of George Elliot who was sent over as a national representative to both control British citizenry but also help represent British rights. The author details the sequence of events and complete overreactions on the part of the English that eventually led to armed conflict. It portrays the events as more misunderstanding and errors than vicious imperialism. The record in parliament does show that to be somewhat true. The author also puts blame on the foreign secretary for aspects of the militarism that took over and eventually became all that is remembered.The book focuses largely on events prior to the Opium War with a focus on the British in Canton. The author also spends time discussing the Chinese system at the time, the decay of control by the emperor and the corruption in the system. If one wants a history of events leading up to the Opium War from 1790-1840 with a focus on the dynamics between Great Britain and China, this is very readable and entertaining. It doesn't focus on the unequal treaty and events from the middle of the 19th century onwards. but its highly readable for those interested in events prior to the unequal treaties.

A truly impressive history that scholars and the general public alike can enjoy and learn from. Platt's new research adds many layers of understanding to our knowledge of this important period in East-West relations. And his strong focus on the individuals who helped bring about and participated in the Opium War -- with their flaws, complexity, virtues and beliefs -- reaffirms the notion that we are all agents in the making of history, not just victims of social trends and economic forces. As a historian myself (though of Europe, not China), what I admire most about this book is the beautiful writing style -- both clear and precise, conversational yet elegant, and generously peppered with irony and humor (qualities that are essential to the serious study of history, I believe). History is a discipline that tends to produce good writers, but Platt is exceptional in this regard. He is proof that the writing of history, when well done, accurately reflects the gripping human drama that makes up our common past.

About the Author
Lauren Nicolle Taylor lives in the lush Adelaide Hills. The daughter of a Malaysian nuclear physicist and an Australian scientist, she was expected to follow a science career path, attending Adelaide University and completing a Health Science degree with Honours in obstetrics and gynaecology. 

She then worked in health research for a short time before having her first child. Due to their extensive health issues, Lauren spent her twenties as a full-time mother/carer to her three children. When her family life settled down, she turned to writing. 

She is a 2014 Kindle Book Awards Semi-finalist and a USA Best Book Awards Finalist.

This book is a very entertaining read. It's like a combination of the fun and excitement of Conan the Barbarian with the depth and detail of The Lord of the Rings, but it's all its own original story. I enjoyed the way the author made the protagonist uniquely human, and at the same time so much more. Can't wait for the next book in this epic fantasy series.

MC is a gullible fool that has no right to even stay alive.

This book has interesting characters (including lovely women), awesome action, good adult scenes, and a badass protagonist. If you like any of his other books the. You will probably like this book too. If you like herems in this (dark/fantasy) genre then you will love this book.

The book was fairly well written and the story wasn't bad. I just didn't like any of the characters. Couldn't care less about them. I haven't the slightest desire to read the sequel.

Really interesting story and fun characters with well drawn personalities. I enjoyed following along in their adventure a lot, and will for sure buy the next book. I think this is the best book Logan Jacobs has written. Well done!

While fantasy isn't my highest on my priority list, this was a unique MC and a potentially very interesting world that the author has created. I'm looking forward to more.

Logan Jacobs is quickly becoming an author that I check on frequently for new books. His plots are fun and his MCs are likeable. The romances can feel a tad forced at times but nothing that more writing experience can't help improve.

About the Author
Nicola Mandorino was born in Taranto, Italy in 1963. He started studying the piano at the age of 14 and also began teaching himself the guitar. After a short period of study with the classical guitar, he discovered that the playing style used with this instrument had a close relationship to that method of playing used in jazz and fingerpicking. He expanded his knowledge by listening to and studying the recordings of the most well known guitarists and by attending numerous courses and master classes. In 1986 he started a long concert career as a guitarist of many jazz styles. He worked intently at improving the technique of fingerstyle jazz and continued the study of advanced technical fingerpicking. With the wealth of experience and knowledge accumulated over the years, in 1992 he began working as an instructor teaching modern jazz guitar, blues and fingerpicking. He also taught many basic courses for those of entry skill level. He gradually abandoned the traditional methods of teaching and began to develop his own methods that were more modern and closer to the real interests of his students. These methods are proving to be very effective and hundreds of students over the years have enrolled in his courses. His teaching methods make learning to play the guitar fun and help students develop a passion for their instrument. Currently, he is a teacher of modern guitar at the Music Learning Centre and at several Italian musical associations in the province of Taranto, Italy. His courses help his students maintain a high level of interest and participation. Simultaneously, he continues to play concerts for the public by offering a repertoire of songs consisting of fingerpicking, jazz, country, bluegrass and Irish folk.

As a boy I had McQuarrie's art from the STAR WARS portfolio covering the walls of my room. I bought all the poster books that had his art. I read everything I could about him in STARLOG. All these years I dreamed that someone would create a definitive release of his work. Today a huge box arrived and now I can't stop smiling. I appreciated that the set was double boxed. No dings. It's huge and heavy, on par with STAR WARS FRAMES. Maybe heavier. My only complaint is that some of my favorite paintings are reproduced as a 2-page spread and they suffer because of the gutter distorting the image. The upside is the detail visible. The binding is nicely sewn so the book opens mostly flat. And I am delighted by how much TEXT there is to read.This is a set of books I will enjoy and come back to again and again for the rest of my life. I haven't been as excited about a Star Wars book since Rinzler's THE MAKING OF STAR WARS. Truth be told, this set may be only second to that series. Why specifically? McQuarrie rarely kept his early renderings. When Lucas wanted a change, McQuarrie just painted over whatever Lucas wanted fixed. Because copies of the paintings were made immediately for distribution to the designers of the movie, each version of his paintings was unintentionally saved from the dust bin of history. Not only does this set include the studies for his paintings, but EVERY version of each painting (with commentary). It's more than I could have ever hoped for. The printing and color are first rate. The only painting that could possibly be missing as far as I can tell is the night time establishing shot of Chewbacca's house in the STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL, but it's unclear if McQuarrie created that painting. The rest of his paintings, studies, sketches, Christmas cards, doodles, pop-up books, posters, storyboards and even drawings fans rescued from Lucasfilm's trash bins are here. Really too wonderful for words.I thought of how STAR WARS changed the way movies were made and seen, how it opened the door for everything that followed from Lucas, how it inspired the lives of so many artists, including my own. Then I realized that without these drawings, none of that would have happened the way it happened, because some of the art in these volumes helped convince the studio to proceed with pre-production on STAR WARS when they may have been considering pulling the plug because they had no idea, visually, what it was about.In my opinion this is among the most important Star Wars books ever released.

This huge (and heavy) book set is the ultimate treasure for whoever is a greedy fan of Ralph McQuarrie's work on the classic Star Wars trilogy!It contains literally EVERYTHING! From the tiny sketch to the final vis-dev illustration and matte painting. You'll find yourself staring at every single page of these books for hours. It's gonna take you days if not weeks to go through the full extent of the master's work. At least that's the case for me!And the print quality is just stunning!

I think it would be important for me to qualify my background briefly before my statements regarding these volumes;I am an illustrator and fine artist with more than two decades of professional production, education, and exhibition experience. In recent years, I’ve turned my attention to concept art and design for the entertainment industry, and as such I have looked to keep on hand not only imagery that fuels my creativity as I strive to reach that next level, but the creative visions that remind me of the excitement and enthusiasm that inspired me to become an artist in the first place.To that end, I could not purchase a better book. These lavishly (profusely so) illustrated volumes could be textbooks for an entertainment concept design curriculum. I say this, of course, with an understanding of the range of sophisticated digital software tools available to artists today – this compilation, full of hand-crafted art, is a powerful testament to the creativity and talent of Ralph McQuarrie, whose visions based on George Lucas’ early Star Wars scripts left an indelible mark on film history and popular culture.Despite owning several volumes that feature the artwork and design for the original trilogy of Star Wars films… I was shocked at the number of images I had never seen before. And, I’m not talking about “after thought” sketches or doodles – these are fully-realized conceptual designs in pencil, ink, marker, and paint. Hundreds of them. Content? If Ralph McQuarrie sneezed in 1976, and the tissue looked like a tie-fighter, I swear it’s in this collection. I joke, but the point is you’ll see where the design work for these ground-breaking films took many (wrong) directions before arriving at the designs that became iconic, which of course is a powerful lesson for any aspiring conceptual designer to understand. With pencils, markers, paint… and a trusty photocopier… you see here, in chronological order, McQuarrie crafting Star Wars with his hands through sheer talent and tenacity. This book is also notated with interesting side stories about the artwork, the context and purpose for the art, its use in the final films. There are even stories that help you to understand Mr. McQuarrie as a person – a look at the problem solver that McQuarrie, and the many pioneers at ILM, had to be. The reproductions in these volumes are worthy of its subject, and they are presented with clear, large, and concise details that would impress any museum curator – indeed, if the 2,000 works of art in these volumes was a touring museum exhibition, this could be its catalog.Of course, Ralph McQuarrie’s work speaks for itself, and it is presented in these beautiful hardcover volumes in a manner that does absolute justice not only to the history of these influential films, but to the artist himself.

I read numerous reviews on this collection, but words don't do it justice. The presentation is exquisite. As a coffee table conversation book, one would almost never know it was a prized possession of a Star Wars nerd. The binding is a brilliant black velvet. To flip through the pages is to witness the genius of Ralph McQuarrie. He was ahead of his time in talent and vision. If you question the price tag, you shouldn't. This is one of my prized possessions of Star Wars memorabilia. For that matter, it ranks in the top 10 of my Earthly possessions.

I thought i wrote a review already but i must have just thought about it. These books are a gem. Seriously if you love Star Wars, Ralph McQuarrie's art, and/or Art books in general, this is something to have in your collection. Like so many others, I grew up watching Star Wars. I'm also a newer artist, as a hobby, so i like having these in my art book collection. They are SUPER heavy, but slide surprisingly easy in and out of the protective box/case. The quality is well worth the money. I am not adding photos because there are already a ton of them provided in the reviews, but I was really pleased at how nice these are. It's something that will last for ages and can be passed down to your kids, etc. <3
