The sewn binding means that you can use this book without it falling to pieces.The book is vitiated by the fact that in most cases it is impossible to tell what pigment or colouring matter is being talked about. For example, what ever is “Havannah lake” (page 30)? Anyone familiar with the topic is aware that proprietary names are dreamed up by colourmen, usually with fraudulent intent as part of the motivation. For example, while the word “permanent” can tend to mean “non-aniline” in colour names, it never means “lightfast,” and users need to know that the word “permanent” in a colour name usually means “impermanent” when the colour is used.The author mentions that some artists’ paints have the pigments specified on their packaging, but does not use that insight to make his book worthwhile. He mentions that alizarin crimson is fugitive, but on nearly every page he mentions the mixing qualities of alizarin crimson, as though he is recommending it. Many of his colour names specify no pigment at all, and only luck governs whether the user of this book will use the same pigment or a different pigment from that used by the author. When it comes to dye-based inks, a name like “cobalt blue,” which specifies a cobalt aluminate or some related compound, must be misleading, since a transparent dye ink will be using no such substance.The book is vitiated by lack of proofreading. This is borne out by confused and ungrammatical sentences on pages 26 and 93, the use of “chrome” where “chromium” is meant on page 24, the spellings of “cinnebar” (page 21) and “sulfur” (passim), the characterising of orpiment as “arsenic trisulphate” (at least here his spelling is right even if his facts are wrong). I suppose I should mention that the word “sulphur” is derived from Latin “sulpur;” it always has a “p,” it never has an “f,” and the “h” is optional, if now customary.He condescendingly mentions “simple” pigments used in cave paintings from 30,000 years ago. The pigments are no more simple than the ones used now.He launches into what he calls “tertiary colours” on page 13, but only specifies the variable mixing of secondary colours. He does not know what tertiary colours are. His definition of “organic” pigments on page 21 is simply wrong. He retails the old chestnut of Indian Yellow being made of cattle urine, which has been known to be wrong for a long time.None of this addresses the main part of the book, the colour mixing charts. While these suffer from the inadequate specification of the pigments used, that is not all. I cannot believe that the addition of black lightens raw sienna, as the diagram on page 43 would have us believe. I cannot believe that the addition of black lightens sap green, as the diagram on page 53 would have us believe. Those are the most glaring of the many things that stretch one’s credulity.He seems to ignore the fact, in the matter of mixing inks, that some well-known ink series use dye inks for all colours except black and white. Since there are no white dyes, all white inks use pigment. Nearly all black inks for artists’ use are pigmented with carbon black. The author seems unable to come to grips with that fact when discussing inks and when discussing the admixture of white.I suppose the good part of the book is the encouragement to experiment yourself. But, really, this book is rather slipshod.

If you buy lots and lots of premixed tubes of paints this will show you how to mix more. But if you want really good color theory or formulas on how to mix colors from a basic palette keep looking. This book is not even remotely all you'll ever need to know.

I’ve had this book for years. I use it for occasional reference. Some of the colors listed for mixing are particular to certain vendors (i.e., Old Holland, Utrecht) which makes it less accurate to mix those colors IF you don’t have that color and brand. In oil mixing for instance Prussian Green is referenced but is not a color made by many vendors. It would be great for this book to be updated and expanded.

Absolutely love the color combos done in this book and that each one has three incremental gradations, and the organization of the book. Really, really nice color printing. I would recommend to anyone who wants a quick reference for color blending. I've done these color charts many times myself, but call it age, I just don't have them all memorized. This is a great, desk-top reference. I actually keep mine on a mini-easel right on my work table. Love it.

Easy to use visual aid. If working in Encaustic the gouache or oil color mixing information work best. As one who uses several mediums I know I will get a lot of use out of this book.

Very comprehensive! and well taught. Charts of mixing colors are incredibly helpful. Best formative book I have ever read. I highly recommend it!!!

My perspective is that of a student artist, since I began taking lessons only about 18 months ago. Thus, for anyone in the beginner / intermediate category I consider this book to be a must. I can't speak for advanced students or professionals, but they might well feel the same way about this aid.

About the Author

Steven B. Heymsfield, MD, brings a broad range of experience in research to the writing of this book. He is trained in physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine, all of which relate to the measurement and study of body composition. Dr. Heymsfield is currently the executive director of clinical studies, metabolism at Merck in Rahway, New Jersey, where he oversees Merck's Clinical Obesity Research Program.

Additionally, he is a visiting scientist at the Obesity Research Center at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital. Prior to his current position, Dr. Heymsfield was a professor of medicine at the Columbia University, New York, College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Heymsfield has conducted national and international presentations and made many contributions to publications in the field. Timothy G. Lohman, PhD, is a leading scientist in the field of body composition assessment. A respected researcher, he explores body composition methodology and changes in body composition with growth and development, exercise, and aging. His leadership in standardization of body composition methodology is well recognized.

Dr. Lohman is a professor in the department of exercise science at the University of Arizona. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Education, a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, and a member of the Youth Fitness Advisory Committee of the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas, Texas. He is the author of many research articles and an editor of the Anthropometric Standardization Reference Manual, published by Human Kinetics. Dr. Lohman is also author of Advances in Body Composition Assessment.

ZiMian Wang, PhD, is an associate research scientist at Columbia University College and research associate in the Obesity Research Center of St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center. Trained in biology, biochemistry, physiology, and chemistry, he has published more than 100 research papers on the topic of human body composition.

Scott B. Going, PhD, is an associate professor in the department of nutritional sciences at the University of Arizona. An expert in body composition models and methods, he has more than 20 years of related teaching experience and research experience in this field.

Ajahn Brahm is by far my favorite Buddhist teacher. I have read all the others that are staples of your spiritual bookstore shelf--Chodron, Kornfield, Salzberg, Hanh, Surya Das, etc.. They are all useful teachers, but they lack Brahm's sense of humor, simplicity, and, quite frankly, what I take to be his empowerment. Brahm, a former British physicist and a plain spoken fellow, is, I believe, a genuine spiritual adept and an advahoot--to use the Hindi term for one who has given up everything for enlightenment. This means he has the spiritual power (the shakti, to again use a term from Hindi tradition) to accelerate your meditative progress simply by his presence and that presence adheres in his words, teachings, and techniques. If you practice his meditation teachings, you will quickly find yourself having blissful and unusual experiences--experiences that were absent or hard to come by when I practiced the meditation techniques given by other Buddhist teachers in the West. Because of this, he appears to be somewhat controversial in the Western Buddhist community. He is not nearly as warmly embraced by the folks I mentioned above as one might expect given the efficacy of his techniques. Yes, Kornfield writes an introduction to this book, but he offers some doubts or hesitancy concerning Brahm's teachings regarding Jhanas. I am not an advanced student so I am not qualified to enter into this debate, but I only know that Brahm's techniques work for me and Kornfield's tend to leave me cold. So if you're looking for Buddhist techniques that feel warm and juicy, instead of distant and intellectual, check out Master Brahm. He'll clear your head and warm your heart!

I've been studying Ajahn Brahm's YouTube videos on meditation for about a month. They've brought me peace of mind and bliss in my day-to-day life. So I decided to grab a copy of this handbook. It contains everything from his video taped meditation retreats laid out in an organized and in-depth way. The handbook goes beyond the videos. The methods are the same and they don't conflict with each other.Let me first step back and say that Ajahn Brahm's teachings on meditation are the only ones that have ever worked for me. I learned meditation at a Zen center in Atlanta in 2002 and have practiced that style of Zen meditation on and off. I'd lose my practice whenever I'd find no joy in it. I felt more frustrated and the "concentration" I developed made me more on edge. It wasn't until I recently started learning from Ajahn Brahm that I realized I was doing it all wrong.Of course Buddhists over the past 1000+ years can't seem to agree on anything, and Thich Naht Hanh's teachings on meditation conflict with Ajahn Brahms, for example, but I can tell you that I have experienced deep joy from Ajahn Brahm's interpretation of the Buddha's meditation methods. Therefore I'm sticking with it.Thanks to Ajahn Brahm's methods, I'm meditating throughout the day whenever I can find spare time simply because I now love to meditate. Meditation never feels like a chore. I do it now because I want to.

For those who are interested in easy to understand instructions about meditation, this is the book. The author is a famous Buddhist monk who has been meditating for over 40 years. He gets into very deep meditative states and explains how anyone who wants to reach those same states of immense calm can do the same. For those who like the book, there are over 1000 YouTube videos with talks given by Ajahn Brahm on many different life topics. He adds humor to most of his talks and is an excellent speaker able to explain things very clearly.

Over the years as a practicing Buddhist I have read my share of books and manuals on meditation, especially those dealing with or touching upon Ānāpānasati and Jhāna. Initially I read these many books to learn from experienced meditators what to do and then, after I had accumulated quite a store of them, I re-read them to reconcile their different and sometimes conflicting messages.Is Jhāna attainable these days, in this noisy, me-me-me world of ours? Some books hold that this is no longer possible (maybe one in a million, if that, can truly attain these deep absorptions, they say); other books skirt the issue altogether; while Ajahn Brahm courageously holds that: “Yes, it is possible.” And not only possible, but attainable by anyone, given the right intention, a virtuous life, and perseverance.This book is a meditation manual, and now, looking over my book shelf of its many siblings and cousins, I clearly see that if I could only bring one of them with me to that clichéd desert island, this would be the one.Ajahn Brahm is an intelligent man, and he reasons very clearly. His analysis of the applicable Pali Canon references and his reconciliation of apparently conflicting passages deserve applause.His approach to Samādhi and Jhāna is logical and practical, and—above all—both understandable and doable. Setting out from the basics of meditation, navigating through the handling of hindrances, then treating mindfulness and the beautiful breath with both clarity and contagious enthusiasm, he leads you all the way from your initial sitting down and letting go of past and future, to—down the path a ways—enlightenment and Nibbāna.This is a book (a manual, a friend) that invites and encourages practice, and as such (despite Jack Kornfield’s somewhat guarded introduction and recommendation) is what, in my view, the world desperately needs today.In two words: Highly Recommended.

The clearest roadmap to enlightenment I've encountered. Through following its instructions seriously for a time, I was able to achieve the first jhana. I haven't progressed beyond that stage due to my own lack of focus in the last few years, not because of this book's instruction. I have no personal experience to back up its claims about the remaining jhanas. But my intuition tells me that this book is correct. One feels, in reading it and following its very practical advice, like an arrow speeding toward the target.

Constantly in the news, I have been wanting to know about Pakistan. Hearing of the Indus Civilization which created modern plumbing along the river more than 4,000 years ago, I decided to focus on the river to learn about Pakistan. Published in 2008, Ms. Albinia has seen Pakistan develop since Jean Fairley wrote The Lion River. Ms. Albinia starts at the delta & travels up the length of the Indus to its mouth in China. Tragically, she finds that China has dammed the river a short way from the mouth. Fortunately, the Indus is fed by many powerful tributaries all along its course, so the millions of people downstream who depend on the river are not lost. What I especially liked in Empires of the Indus were the fascinating stories the author recounts of her travels. She was in danger several times due to the political instability. She crossed borders into Afghanistan, Ladakh & Tibet. A brave traveler! I came away with several ideas: for all the political conflict & repression, she relied on the common folk of the countryside to join with her in her discoveries & they did not fail her. She makes plain the daunting complexities of tribe & culture in attempting to understand this country. Military coups & autocratic leaders have been the norm here. It will take an unimaginable revolution to alter its course. A great read.

This is an excellent book, which was recommended by John Green in his Crash Course World History series. It takes you back in time while also providing a travelogue for modern Pakistan, with bits of Afghanistan, Tibet and India thrown in. Take a journey to the source of the Indus, to it's primeval beginning and the lives of ordinary people in countries we in the west barely know anything bout.

This is a wonderful book. A travelogue tracing the Sindhu river from its place of confluence to the place of origin, taking us back in time - historiography. For someone interested in the history of the people, places and culture along the river, this is a must read. I've recommended this book to other people, who also loved the book.

This is a very well written and exciting book about an adventurous journey interwoven with less known bits of local history, culture, and ecology. One of the most interesting and best written books I have read in the last years.

Loved this book. Author has documented her travels in the areas influenced by the Indus River. I enjoyed her stories about the past and present. I commend her for bravely traveling to all types of areas of Sindh to gather her material. I think she has done a great service to the people of Sindh and many other curious minds and admirers of History. It's one of the great parts of our world and I really enjoyed how Alice brought it out.Update (4/3/2013) - I write my initial review after reading the first 5 chapters, directly related to my personal heritage. And now that I'm done with the rest of the book, the rest of it did not disappoint either! I think the Author's insight into the history of the areas has great depth. Her co-relations and explanations make this a very interesting book.

Very readable and informative, though a bit dry.

A brave journey. The book rings quite true. Albinia has a good understanding of the societies through which she travels. I enjoyed the book and learned much.

Really enjoyed this in-depth review by an author who has literally gone deep, exploring the geography and the people, experiencing and learning along the way.

If you were to have just one book on the application of systems thinking in the business world, then this is the book. The book starts of by assuming that the reader knows nothing about the subject. However, a couple of chapters later you will see yourself studying much more advanced material and finding it relatively easy. Systems modeling is an extremely powerful technique that easily lends itself as a tool to understand the complexity that one finds in the business world today. Unfortunately, the business world is pron to waves of "fads" that seem to dictate how one should tackle problems. These fads are usually short lived and "fluffy". Systems dynamics is the opposite. The modeling techniques described in this textbook introduce a much needed rigor into the business world. The author writes clearly and you rarely have to read a paragraph more than once. My favorite part of the textbook is definitely the case studies that the author describes in detail. These case studies serve two goals. First, they show the reader how to use the modeling process which is described in the book, second they show the reader why these tools are so powerful. The book comes with a CD that contains three student versions of different programs. You can chose the one that you find best. I can honestly say that I cannot find any fault with this textbook. The topic is fascinating, the author writes clearly, the font is large, there are plenty of case studies, theres a CD with the book, there is an excellent bibliography at the end, and the entire book contains extremely valuable footnotes. Everyone who plans to write a textbook should check this one out first to get a few pointers.

Sterman's book is far and away the best and most comprehensive book on system dynamics for business. Although the title is "Business Dynamics" it really is a text on applying system dynamics to both business and larger social issues/systems.If you are a strong student of business and systems then this is the book for you. It is highly recommended if you are interested in learning the most you possibly can regarding system dynamics and how to model systems. However, if you are searching for an introduction to this area - watch out. The book is actually quite advanced - it is used at MIT and other graduate business programs at top universities.What is amazing about this book is that it blends absolute precision, correctness and detail with practical modeling advice and insight and it is written in a relaxed style with numerous examples.
