This book came into existence because there did not seem to be any single book that would be adequate as a text for courses on hearing aids or that could advise practicing clinicians on all aspects of hearing aids.

I have aimed to make the book both practically useful and theoretically sound. Issues are explained rather then described. Wherever possible, practical recommendations are based on empirical research, and where there is no research to draw upon, the tentative nature of the recommendation or conclusion is indicated. Readers who already know the field well will notice that the book contains some data and clinical procedures that are published for the first time, as well as hopefully some new insights and perspectives into older issues.

The book is designed to be read on a number of levels. For readers who need only an overview of a topic, the synopsis at the beginning of each chapter should suffice. Most readers will hopefully be enticed to read further; the essential information on each topic is marked with a shaded bar in the margin. These marked paragraphs are designed to be read, and to be understandable, without the intervening paragraphs. I think of the marked material as a thin book buried inside this thick book. Some academic courses may wish to restrict themselves to just this material, which includes approximately half the book. The remaining material provides a greater level of detail. Finally, the most detailed comments are tucked away as footnotes and as sections in small print. The material at all levels is further segmented by presenting the most theoretical material and the most practical material in the form of self-contained panels. These two types of panels are differentiated by their appearance and by the panel titles.

This sixth edition of Public Relations: Strategies and Tactics takes students into the new century with fresh insights and abundant examples to prepare them for the practice of public relations in a decade full of change and opportunity.

For public relations, the first decade of the new millennium will bring global expansion, tantalizing possibilities for use of the Internet and other new technologies, and increased concern about the ethical aspects of the work. This edition focuses particular attention on these trends.

With pleasure, the three original authors of this textbook, Dr. Dennis L. Wilcox, Phillip H. Ault, and Dr. Warren K. Agee, welcome a new coauthor, Dr. Glen T. Cameron, to their group.

Dr. Cameron holds the Maxine Wilson Gregory Chair in Journalism Research and is director of the Center for Advanced Social Research at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has received the prestigious Pathfinder Award from the Institute for Public Relations. Dr. Cameron prepared the instructor's manual and other supplementary material for the fifth edition of this textbook. The explosive growth of the Internet is changing public relations practice. The Internet supplements and, in growing degree, replaces many of the traditional methods of research and delivery of messages. An understanding of these constantly expanding changes is essential.

Most students entering this course have at least basic experience in using the Internet. Therefore, we have designed Chapter 20, "The Internet and Other New Technologies," to:

Chapter 2 describes the evolution of public relations, including a look to the future. Because of extensive concern with the issue of ethical standards, the chapter on "Ethics and Professionalism" appears early in the textbook as Chapter 3. "The Individual in Public Relations" and "Public Relations Departments and Firms" appear as Chapters 4 and 5.

Under this arrangement, students are introduced in logical sequence to the public relations field—its purpose, its history and values, and the career opportunities for individuals wishing to pursue it.

More importantly, however, the text emphasizes the increasingly important issue of diversity, both in public relations personnel and in the audiences public relations reaches. In Chapter 4 we discuss the high percentage of women in the field and the growing number of them who hold toplevel positions. We also note the expanding role of ethnic groups among practitioners.

Part Two: Process

The four chapters in this part form a unified whole, taking students in sequence through the basic steps involved in a public relations program-research, planning the program, communication, and evaluation.

To explain the process, Chapters 6-8 follow the public relations programs of several organizations from conception to evaluation. Among these wide-ranging examples are the Mack Trucks campaign to increase its market share, the Turkish government's promotion to attract tourists, Microsoft's introduction of its Windows 95 software, and a national "election" by M&M Chocolate Candies to select an additional color for its candy bits (the winner: blue).

The challenge of crisis communication in Chapter 8 receives extensive coverage, supported by discussion of numerous cases, both classic and new, and an examination of how various organizations respond to crises.

Part Three: Strategy

This part discusses the fundamental concepts of strategy. First, we explain how public opinion is formed (Chapter 10) and the ways practitioners can use it to direct their objectives. Second, we look at the audience to which programs are directed (Chapter 11). More precisely, this covers innumerable target audiences—each with special qualities and interests-and describes the selection of media suitable for each program. Third, we describe the legal restrictions under which public relations professionals operate (Chapter 12).

Chapter 10 draws particular attention to the identification and use of opinion leaders, and it cites the importance of audience analysis. In Chapter 11, we have added the online media to the methods of reaching an audience and have examined diversity in public relations audiences. We present Bureau of Census statistics on ethnic populations in the United States and emphasize the swift growth of the Hispanic population, an important public relations audience in both English and Spanish languages. In Chapter 13, sexual harassment is included among the legal problems examined.

Part Four: Application

The next logical step is for students to learn the practical ways in which the process and strategies of public relations are applied in major areas of practice. In this part we discuss applications in the corporate, governmental, nonprofit, international, and educational areas, each with special requirements and goals.

I'm hopeful that this book will become a handbook to agile development teams around the world seeking the opportunity to produce more secure code and improve their application security posture. I recommend that readers start with Chapter 16 "What Does Agile Security Mean" as it's great to get context from the authors first before jumping into the material of the book.The authors represented the honest struggle that application teams face day to day trying to make their applications more secure. Software has constant threats, whether is poor design, software anti-patterns, unnecessarily exposed attack surfaces, insecure software libraries, etc...The authors took the time emphasize the importance of build security into the build pipeline. Agile development teams should strive to achieve as much measured quality in their CI build pipeline.I happen to work with one of the software companies mentioned in the book. While my team is flattered to be referenced among many amazing companies, it's not my intention to write this review on my company's behalf. Rather, I want to commend the authors for putting out a great foundational resource for educating the agile development community about application security.

This book could not have come at a better time. With the growing threats to critical infrastructure and IoT, which my company produces, guidance on how to practically integrate security into your SDLC is critical. I have read a few books that either get so into the weeks as to make the process unobtainable, or are so high level I leave without knowing what I need to do next to realize Secure SDLC. I presented to a large conference of ICS and IoT developers this week and quoted a few sections of Laura Bell and teams book. They have a very concise and understandable way of presenting and describing complex topics to make them manageable. The book does a great job of introducing the concepts of Secure SDLC to both developers and security professionals to equip them with the knowledge they need. I appreciated the If this, then that, flow in the beginning to help the reader self classify as either a developer or security professional, then point them to which chapters they should start with. Really saved me some time and the sections were spot on in their content and guidance.Overall great book. I have earmarked quite a few pages and even had to get the highlighter out. Most of my development teams are more than likely going to purchase it...

It is not often I read a book, and all the ideas and suggestions in it resonate well with me, and I want to read to the end, and I even make notes and follow the suggested articles. I think all the Security People, Developers, Scrum Master, Product Owners and Architects who are struggling to figure out how the various development processes under the Agile banner can work securely, should read and understand this book. It offers some excellent and practical ideas to base a good conversation about getting security done in an enabling, positive way. A great read, which I strongly recommend!
