From Publishers Weekly
The contrivance of this leadership handbook is a story-within-a-story: when a newbie business reporter snags an interview with a powerful CEO, the businessman takes the journalist under his wing and reveals the seven secrets he learned from his own mentor many years ago. These "secrets" turn out to be the very same principles that drive other leadership books: respect your employees and they will follow you; know their hopes and personalities; instill a sense of group identification and trust; give 100% from the heart at all times. WhatÂ’s unique about this leadership manual is its view that "people are a lot like sheep," leading to an overarching sheep metaphor that drives the entire book. In the chapter on direction, for example, the mentor urges shepherd-managers to lead with gentle nudges of the staff before employing the heavy-handed, painful prodding of the rod. The chapter on company identification talks about the need for "tagging" the sheep so they are instantly recognizable as a cohesive flock. And who knew that the phrase "pull the wool over his eyes" originated in actual shepherding techniques?Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From the Back Cover
Find inspiration and a fresh perspective on the art of leadership in this account of a cub reporter who lands the interview of a lifetime and walks away with the keys to exceptional leadership. When the reporter meets with the most respected CEO in America, the businessman shares the seven secrets he learned long ago from his mentor--an eccentric but brilliant professor who taught him proven management principles that, while ancient in origin, are applicable in today's fast-paced, high-tech world. The Way of the Shepherd is a compact, heart-warming story dotted with humor. It will teach you how to lead the people close to you so they will view their work as a calling rather than merely a job, a place to belong rather than a place to work. It shows leaders how to infuse work with meaning and how to engage, energize, and ignite their workforce and gives employees a better understanding of what makes for a quality work experience. It is a powerful metaphor for leaders that reaches back 5,000 years. It is . . . The Way of the Shepherd.

I had to get this book and read it for a class and let me tell you...This is the first 'required read' that I enjoyed wholeheartedly. I learned so much and it excited me to go out and practice what it teaches with my co-workers and boss. I read this book in two sittings, it's not long and it's an easy read. Even if you aren't required to read this but are considering it, I would definitely encourage you to do so. I would encourage teachers to make students read this book because it has so much to give and we need more people like this book teaches in the world.
This book does a great job of quickly showing how to lead people under your direction with care, attention, and empathy. Though the analogy of shepherd/sheep isn't a perfect analogy, it helped me understand why some managers I've had irritated me or left me feeling insecure while others inspired me to do my best work. The difference is in how much a manager is willing to invest in their team. Those who are selfish won't invest much in their team and hence won't see much return on their "investment". Those who genuinely care about the people under their guidance are more likely to receive a positive ROI.
One of the best leadership books I ever read. The writer walks us through the Training that the CEO received, describes at the start his career. I first read it after meeting/hearing Dr. Lehman in Phoenix and gave my first copy to my boss to read and pass around, I purchased this copy to pass around the office in Minnesota.
As a pastor, I benefited greatly by reading this book. I have read many of Dr. Leman's books before, so I wasn't expecting this kind of format. This is a parable of a professor/shepherd who shares with one of his MBA students principles of managing people by introducing him to his flock of sheep. The principles in the parable will help those in leadership positions in business as well as in ministry. The book is quite short and can be read in several hours.Principles in the parable include knowing your flock, engaging them on a regular basis, building trust with your followers, keeping your flock well informed, protecting them, using persuasion rather than coercision, helping them when they get in trouble, being willing to pay the price of leadership, and developing a heart for your flock.
One of the best books I have ever read on managing people as people, leading people, not driving them, caring for where they are at, protecting them and being with them. I would suggest strongly anyone who is entering into any management position, religiously or otherwise, to make this book a must read on a continuous basis.
I read this book and was very touched. I have been to church for many years and I am also a pastor of about 2 years. I very highly recommend this book. This book is based on information from 2 executives who learned how to love and handle people by learning from loving and handling sheep. There is a pattern that will produce love and loyalty in people. 1. We actually have to value them...... If you want to learn even a way to have better relationships with people in life, I recommend this book. I have read many books in my life and I have few books that I would say are must reads, this is one. That is the best I can say about this book. I will add; if you care about people and want to understand how to help them the best you can - you will be very pleased to own this book even if you are a businessman.
This book was recommended by friend and professional colleague. As a Bible-believing, born-again Christian, I have realized that the best guidance of leadership is to reflect JESUS CHRIST. The author’s example of delivering this content in a storytelling format made the learning easier to absorb, reflect and apply. I trust that the strategies of this book will affirm biblical lessons of shepherding any flock- professional and personal. If a person truly stated that his/her present pilgrimage is a calling, the person will exhibit the “heart†to grow and learn to be more effective.
120 pages of great advice and writing. You can read this in a few hours and it will either teach or reaffirm your beliefs in leading people. It also a great book for those being over-managed to give to their leaders or measure them by.
